contour farming system


ALL ABOUT MAKING OF CONTOUR SYSTEM OF LEVELING LAND




Introduction:

Cultivation of crop on slopping land or hilly area includes proper leveling of land for safe and optimum production. One of the aspects of making land leveled in hills for better production includes contour system of making contour line and leveling it.

Objective

  • To maintain land suitable for cultivating crops
  • To make cultural operation in land for cultivation easily
  • To reduce soil erosion in sloppy land( important objective)
  • To make better environment for management of water


 Making of a instrument for making contour line


Materials required

  • Two wood planks of dimension: 1.5-2m*4-5 cm*2cm
  • One plank of dimension: 1m*4-5 cm*2cm
  • Strong thread of about 1m length
  • A pebble of 50gm


Steps
  • Attach the one end of each two longer planks with each other at one end and leave other free (the attachment is done with pin)
  • The end of short planks are attached at midpoint of longer planks, making shape of letter A
  • Tie the one end of the thread with top of the arrangement (A shaped)
  • The pebble of 50gm is tied up with other end of thread (free end)
  • The plank is ready for making contour line.

Steps:
  • Make it stand on the foot of A shaped arrangement and free thread to move.(the place from where you want to start the line)
  • Place the peg on the foot point of arrangement
  • Mark a line with marker on shorter plank/base plank from where thread passed
  • Exchange the stand point of A-shaped arrangement
  • Mark 2nd line in the same way on same plank as before
  • Mark the 3rd line between the 1st and 2nd line on the same plank
  • Make the arrangement to stand one foot at the peg and new peg at the point where the thread aligns with 3rd line on the plank. The direction initiates the contour line
  • Place a peg there
  • Make the arrangement to stand one foot at new peg and find other one in the same way before
  • The process is continued and completed when a complete line of peg  is obtained
  • The line is contour line

Level the land above contour line

Post modification

Place some soil/stone at the base of contour line
Some perennial plant with high density grass is planted at contour line

The land is in contour system now.
