A
proposal on Bottleneck of Fish Farming in Nepal
1.1
Introduction
Market exists in any society where
exchange of goods and services takes place. It is useful in countering
non-economic obstacles such as people’s value, attitudes and way of life which
do not alter in the face of economic opportunity but instead can prevent the
pace of development being maintained. In the area of social marketing, the
design, implementation and control of social ideas offer a powerful tool
(Kotler and Zaltman, 1971)
In the context of Nepal, the primary
cause of lagging behind in course of economical development is lack of well
marketing. Many strategies are failed due to lack of well marketing and extension.
The concept of organized fish farming was developed in 1981/1982 with the start
of the aquaculture development project support services and credit facilities
have been extended to entrepreneurs in the fish marketing business. But still
now the farmers are unable to get suitable fruit for their hard works in
market. But if some problems like instability of government policies, storage,
transportation can be improved then fish farming would surely contribute the
large national economy. Fisheries are important to humankind in all countries,
particularly in developing nation like Nepal for its aim at production of fish
food, provide way and means of living and income, offers employment
opportunities and play a vital role in improving the economy of the majority of
people involved in fish farming.
1.2
Statement of the problem
Fish being a highly perishable commodity,
its marketing assumes special significance. If needs good roads and quick
transport facilities, suitable container, cold storage to keep fish fresh for
longer time, suitable agency. These facilities are generally not available up
to their desired expectation and the fisherman faces more problems. Further the
changing policies, unstable government, climatic changes and other many factors
are affecting the marketing of fish in Nepal.
A compilation (FAD, 2005 and
DFOD,2005) indicated that in 2003/2004 silver carp accounted for major share of
(5125 tonnes,26%) of total aquaculture production of 20,000 tones. However its
price reported to be lowest in market.
In 2003/04 Nepalese rupees 0.7
million worth of salmon, frozen fish brine were imported but here is no
organized data based on import and export of fishes. Such problems are still
causing great economic loss to our country.
1.3
Objective of the study
The
prime objective of the study is to analyze the poor marketing condition in Nepalese
Aquaculture aiming to mediate those problems of farmers to concerned
authorities. Hence the proper aim to achieve following objectives
·
To
explore the problems of fish marketing to offer suitable suggestions based on
the finding s of the study
·
To
study the root cause of fish marketing problem and make it available to the
concerned authorities
1.4
Limitations of the study
No significant study has been
conducted on the problem of fish marketing. So there exists a wide gap or blank
past in this regard. The study is carried out over specific area among the
people of Bharatpur-19 and 20, Chitwan.
Our research represents the problem of whole Nepal but not sole
situation of fish marketing. We will not get co-operative and hospitable
respondent to complete our research. Hence the information obtained is very
insufficient to analyze the situation.
1.5
Organization of the study
The study is divided into three
chapters, namely introduction, review of literature and research methodology.
The first chapter deals with the background of the study. The second chapter
focuses on review of the related literature of fish marketing in Nepal. The
third chapter is on research methodology which includes research design, source
of data, collection techniques, sampling, data analysis and presentation.
Chapter-II: Review of Literature
Fish marketing in proper condition can enhance both national
and international level benefits. It establishes good relationship at
international level, employment opportunities and rise in income. However there
is less well established policies developed against this for boosting marketing
condition. Aquaculture has relatively very short story in Nepal. The families
engaged in this business were deprived of their benefits due to lack of
marketing facilities, storage, transportation and many more. There is no more
literature on this topic due to its newness or the newness of graduation study
in Nepal.
Chapter-III: Research Methodology
Our research methodology will have two approaches; one
quantitative that deals with data collection using various sources and another
is qualitative that talks about general interview of local farmers and some
socially active personalities.
3.1 Research Area
Our research
will be limited within Bharatpur-19 and 20, Chandranagar, Rampur which will
represent as a whole situation of Chitwan.
3.2 Research Design
The research will
be conducted by our team will be descriptive and qualitative. General
information and l available research works and paper will be collected.
3.3 Data Collection Technique
Both primary and
secondary data will be collected used for this study report. Data collection
will comprise research paper/documents, news, policy statements and more
informal facts. Interview will, preferably be personal and mixed type requiring
both qualitative and quantitative data and will be of short duration.
3.4 Data Analysis and Interpretation
Available data of
this research will be analyzed through the descriptive technique i.e.
interpretation of present table in word and explanation of qualitative
information in organize way. General description on all available data through
interview and several other sources is made on understanding about the problem.
And so made proposal on the topic “Bottleneck of Fish Marketing in Nepal” was
presented.
